Middle School

Classroom size in the Middle School is typically 7-10 students with one teacher and one instructional assistant. There is usually a modified team-teaching approach in the Middle School, with students changing classes about every 45 minutes. A structured cognitive-behavioral approach is taken as students are given the opportunity to earn points and rewards on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis for successfully meeting individualized behavioral goals. Middle School students enjoy a weekly reward period and monthly reward trips, as well as the opportunity to earn special privileges. Increasing the students' awareness of their environment, working towards increasing independence, and improving self-advocacy skills are a major focus of the Middle School program.

The Middle School academic offerings include Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, PE, Home Arts, Computers, Music, Industrial Arts, Keyboarding, Library, and Creative Arts. A certified Guidance Counselor provides in-classroom Group Counseling. Many services are available on an individual need basis.

Middle School students who require more support are served in Transition Classes. This program is designed to help these students ease more gradually into the Secondary program. Students may also receive supportive services in speech and language, reading, physical or occupational therapy, adapted physical education, and group or individual counseling. The older Middle School students may have the opportunity to apply for the numerous on-campus work-oriented programs.
