Enhancement Services: Lunch Program

Pre-K/Kindergarten/Lower School

All Pre-K/Kindergarten/Lower School students need to bring their lunches. Microwaves are available for staff to heat up students' food.

Pre-K and Kindergarten students eat in the own building at 12:00 noon. Lower School students eat lunch in the Activities Center, during one of two periods, starting at 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

The children eat for 20 minutes and then have structured play time. The recess program is comprised of two modes of physical activity:

Outside Play

This is on the playground, where students use "The Big Toy", which is the adopted name for the multi-level jungle gym on the playground. Teachers and assistants may use this time as prep time, as only one person from a classroom needs to be outside watching the students.

Walking Club

Walking club convenes twice a week in the gym. Students have a chance to walk around the gym and record their laps at the end of every period. Everyone is required to go to walking club, where as, at normal recess, the assistant or teacher can decide to use the half hour as prep time.

Middle School & High School

Students eat lunch during one of four lunch periods between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the cafeteria in the Jarmon Center. Lunch periods are 30 minutes, followed by supervised recreation time.

As part of its emphasis on practical life skills development, Vanguard encourages students' independence and self sufficiency in lunch room. Microwaves are available for students to heat up their food. Of course, supervision by staff is constant, and help is always available.

The cafeteria offers a different menu selection every day with items that students can buy. A menu is sent home with the students so they can decide before hand if they want to bring money to buy lunch.
