Clinical Services: Reading

Reading Specialists at The Vanguard School are responsible for providing corrective and remedial services on an individual basis, in a small group, or classroom group learning situation. They also act as a resource person to classroom teachers, assess students, evaluate strengths and weaknesses, maintain testing data, and develop programs appropriate to student needs. Consultative services are also provided with teachers, other specialists, and parents to encourage a multidisciplinary approach to each child.

Students are referred for reading services by teachers, other specialists, or members of the IEP team. The following guidelines, along with a reading assessment, help to determine if services are warranted: a significant difference in reading performance and grade level expectations, poor word recognition skills, poor comprehension skills, poor vocabulary development, or inadequate study skills, especially when any of these factors are interfering with the ability to progress in reading.

The SRA Reading Mastery Program is utilized in the Lower School while the SRA Corrective Reading Program is utilized in the Middle and Upper Schools. Students reading at or above the sixth grade level utilize a literature approach. While these are the primary reading programs utilized, The Vanguard School also uses Wilson Reading Program and other individualized approaches when necessary.
