Staff Development- Induction

The Induction Program

The Induction Program is designed to meet the induction requirements set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The current version was reviewed and revised in August, 2006.

Research and literature on “best practices” in most professions indicate the need for introductory activities for new employees. It is important to provide new employees with opportunities to:

1) learn about the policies and practices of their employer,
2) socialize them to their new field, roles, and responsibilities, and
3) obtain assistance in effective implementation of classroom and related
skills acquired in teacher preparation programs.

For new teachers, induction programs early in their careers can aid in this process.

Induction programs are planned experiences and activities designed by a school’s Induction Council according to state requirements and current knowledge of best practices in this area. The intent of induction programs, in part, is to support new teachers and others by increasing the beginning professional’s ability to improve his/her overall teaching skills. Induction involves a close relationship with at least one experienced professional in the same field, orientation by the new employer, and on-going supervision by properly certificated individuals. Access to relevant information, observations, follow-up, goal-setting, feedback and record-keeping are some of the important features of an effective induction program. The program should be a cooperative and comprehensive opportunity to upgrade both the individual and the profession itself.
