The Vanguard School is a nonprofit, state-licensed, academic day school that is one of 36 Pennsylvania Approved Private Schools for Special Education, selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The school provides comprehensive special education services with a unique focus on the individual child and his or her readiness for life. For nearly 50 years, The Vanguard School has been an innovator in offering an integrated academic, social and life skills approach within a supportive environment- where the ultimate goal is to have each student become an independent, functional, and happy member of society. Vanguard’s innovative K-12 and post-secondary education is a hallmark of the school’s "Learning-for-Life" philosophy, and has resulted in measurable success for graduates.
For nearly 50 years, Vanguard has been at the cutting edge for special education innovation, elevating our institution to a higher graduation rate than the national average. In 2008, our 4% unemployment rate among graduates was significantly lower than the national unemployment rate of 5% that includes non-special needs students (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Our proven platform of academic, social, and physical support services includes pre-school, school-to-work transitioning, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, social skills development, and more. All services are integrated with the right balance of “real world” components to ensure that each student flourishes through a life-long learning experience.
Our staff is highly trained and understanding of the different ways that children learn. Our individualized education program is continually monitored and adjusted to maximize each child’s potential for learning.
Our staff of distinguished special education experts has elevated The Vanguard School to be a key source for education and condition-specific resources and support. The Vanguard School provides parents and interested parties with the knowledge and access they need to provide the best learning environment for their child.
